Five Livingston athletes represented Team Forth Valley in the second round of the Youth Development League, held in Manchester on Sunday 1st June.

The team met at Grangemouth the day before and travelled down to Warrington where they stayed overnight.

On a baking hot race day the athletes were awoken early, with breakfast served at 7.30 AM! Following breakfast the team travelled to the track, a short 30 minute bus journey!

Hazel Shanley, Taygan Henry and Zoe Yule were competing in the U17 Womens age group. Hazel had a good run in the 100m, finishing the 'A' race in a very respectable 3rd place, with a time of 13.3. She also finished 5th in the 200m 'A' race in a time of 28.4, and 3rd 'A' string in the triple jump with a best jump of 9.33m.

Taygan took on the hurdles double, running her first 300m hurdles race in the process! In this event she finished a creditable 2nd in the 'B' race, with a time of 49.7. In the 80m hurdles she finished 3rd in the 'B' race in 13.7. Taygan also placed 2nd in the Long Jump with a best effort of 4.53m. Hazel and Taygan were also part of the 4x100m team that finished in 2nd place in a time of 52.9.

Zoe Yule was competing in the throws, finishing 2nd in the shot putt with a personal best throw of 9.27m. In the javelin she produced another personal best (24.13m) to place 2nd. She also threw well in the discus, claiming another 2nd place with a throw 25.55m, narrowly missing a third personal best.

Jake Thomas and Andrew Mitchell were competing in the U20 Mens category. In the 800m, Jake was 2nd 'A' string in a time of 2:02.8. Andrew managed the same position in the 'B' string, with a time of 2:08.5.

Following their race, they headed to the javelin (yes, you read that right, the javelin throw!) Despite their inexperience in this event, both athletes collected good points, with Jake 5th in the 'A' string with a throw of 17.68m and Andrew 4th in the 'B' string with a throw of 13.37m.

The 1500m followed later in the afternoon, where Jake took victory in the 'A' string and Andrew won the 'B' string event! Their times were 4:17.7 and 4:31.5 respectively. They were also part of the 4x400m relay team that finished in 2nd place in 3:45.0. Jake ran leg three with Andrew on the final leg.

The team finished the match 3rd with 487 points, just 8 points behind the 2nd placed team.

Massive thanks to Jill Summers and Clare Shanley who travelled down with the team as graded officials and helped all day at the event!
