For newcomers to athletics, the age group structure can be quite confusing.
There are different age groups rules for track & field athletics and for cross country.
The "competition year" runs from 1 October to 30 September.
Track & Field
Under 9 - Aged 7 or 8 on 31 August within the competition year.
Under 11 - Aged 9 or 10 on 31 August within the competition year.
Under 13 - Aged 11 or 12 on 31 August within the competition year.
Under 15 - Aged 13 or 14 on 31 August within the competition year.
Under 17 - Aged 15 or 16 on 31 August within the competition year.
Under 20 - Aged 17 or over on 31 August within the competition year but aged under 20 on 31 December in the calendar year of competition.
Senior - Aged 20 or older on 31 December in the calendar year of competition.
Club competitions usually start at Under 9, but league competitions start at Under 11. For league competitions, athletes should be aged at least 9 on the competition day.
Cross Country
Under 9 - Aged 7 or 8 on 31 August before the competition year.
Under 11 - Aged 9 or 10 on 31 August before the competition year.
Under 13 - Aged 11 or 12 on 31 August before the competition year.
Under 15 - Aged 13 or 14 on 31 August before the competition year.
Under 17 - Aged 15 or 16 on 31 August before the competition year.
Under 20 - Aged 17, 18 or 19 on 31 August before the competition year.
Senior - Aged 20 or older on 31 August before the competition year.
For athletes that have competed for the club at least once, your current age categories will be displayed on your athlete profile.
