East District Championship Results

Meadowbank Stadium was the only place to be last weekend as the resurrected East District Championships made a return to the "summer" fixture calendar for the first time in 6 years.

The action started on Saturday morning in the 400m with senior athletes Shawn Wright and Alistair Dalgleish going head-to-head in heat 3. Shawn finished 2nd in a massive personal best of 50.48 to secure a slot in the final, with Alistair one place behind in a season's best of 51.38.

In the 100m, Hazel Shanley won her heat and a place in the u14g final with a personal best of 13.83, while a 4th place finish in heat 2 also secured a Chloe McAlear a second run. In the u16b race, new recruit Grant Kirkwood was 4th in his heat with a wind-assisted best of 12.95, while Shawn Wright was also 4th in his senior men's 100m heat with a wind-assisted 11.65.

After his midweek success in London, u16 athlete Robbie Nairn was back in action on the in-field with the shot putt and discus. Throwing the lighter 4kg shot, Robbie's best throw of 15.42m won him a gold medal, while a 30.91m throw in the discus secured 2nd place and a silver medal!

In the jump events, Shawn Wright jumped 5.50m in windy conditions to finish 7th overall in the senior long jump but, in his 4th event of the day, picked up a bronze medal in the triple jump with a distance of 11.51m! Grant Kirkwood also won a bronze medal with a clearance of 1.45m in the u16b high jump!

Back on the track, Chloe McAlear narrowly missed a medal in the 75m hurdles, finishing 4th in the final with a wind-assisted personal best of 15.21, and, in his 400m final, Shawn Wright ended a demanding day to finish 8th in 52.4.

In one of the last events on Saturday, Chloe McAlear and Hazel Shanley lined up again for their 100m final. In a close race, Hazel finished 5th in 13.96 with Chloe close behind in wind-assisted best of 14.07.

Twelve club athletes were back at Meadowbank on Sunday for the second day of competition, though the conditions were far from ideal with gusty winds and low temperatures.

In the 800m heats, Hannah Mairs finished 5th in her u14g heat in 2:58.28, Katie Marshall was 4th in her u16g heat in 2:49.64 and, in the senior mens event, Craig McDowall was 5th in heat 1 in 2:01.57 which secured him a place in the final.

Jake Thomas and Andrew Mitchell went head-to-head the u18m 800m final with Jake finishing 3rd to win a bronze medal in a time of 2:04.95, while Andrew finished the race 8th in personal best time of 2:14.54. In the senior men's final, Craig McDowall was 6th in 2:05.06.

The under 14 girls were the only club athletes in field action on Sunday. In the shot putt, Robyn Fairley was 6th with a personal best of 6.06m, Kirsty McFadyen was 8th with 5.13m and Hannah Mairs was 9th with 4.18m.

In the u14g long jump, Hazel Shanley picked a bronze medal with a fantastic new personal best of 4.16m, while Kirsty McFadyen was 18th with a personal best of 3.27m and Hannah Mairs was 19th with 3.21m.

Back on the track, 8 club athletes battled against strong winds in the 200m heats with all times wind-assisted. In the u14g heats, in heat 1 Louisa Marshall was 4th in 31.13 and Kirsty McFadyen was 7th in 32.15. Hazel Shanley won heat 2 in 29.47 and Robyn Fairley won heat 4 in 28.77 with both girls qualifying for the next round.

The u16m race was a straight final with Grant Kirkwood finishing 5th in a wind assisted best of 25.75. In the u18m 200m, Andrew Mitchell was 6th in his heat in 26.09 and, in the senior mens heats, Alistair Dalgleish was 6th in heat 1 in 23.07 while Shawn Wright was 6th in heat 2 in 23.33.

In the second u14g 200m semi final, Hazel Shanley was 3rd in 29.79 and Robyn Fairley was just fractions of a second behind in 4th with 29.84. Both set new personal bests and progressed to the final in which Hazel was 6th in 30.34 and Robyn was 8th in 31.47.
