FVL Match 2 Review

 27 May 2009

The Livingston athletes were back at Pitreavie last Thursday for round two of the Forth Valley League. Despite many athletes missing due to injuries or school camps, we still managed to field a strong team with the exception of the under 11 boys where, for the 3rd match in a row, only one athlete wanted to compete.

In the 20 different individual events, the club had six "A" string winners, six "A" string runners-up and six "B" string winners. In the relays, the under 13 girls and boys both won their races for the third time this season.

The "A" string winners were; Gemma Hummerstone, in the under 11 girls 800m, with a time of 3:06.8; Taygan Henry, in the under 11 girls high jump, jumping 0.95m in her first high jump competition; Ruaridh McCusker, throwing 21.99m in the under 15 boys javelin and adding over 1m to his personal best; and Megan Brown, in the under 15 girls 200m, running 31.0.

Robbie Nairn had "A" string wins in both his individual events, running the 200m in a personal best time of 28.9, while later throwing 9.13m to convincingly win the under 13 boys shot putt.

Several other athletes also achieved personal bests at Pitreavie; Taygan Henry, running 3:08.9 in the under 11 girls 800m; Caitlin Smith, running 30.9 in the under 13 girls 200m; Megan Laing, throwing 5.73m in the under 13 girls shot putt; Scott Henderson, running 26.2 in the under 15 boys 200m; Anna McPhillips, jumping 3.15m in the under 15 girls long jump; and Mhairi Horn, throwing 13.70m in the under 15 girls javelin.

In the under 15 girls events, Rhiannon Armstrong and Eileen Hulse both achieved personal best doubles. Rhiannon ran the 200m in a personal time of 28.0 to finish the "A" string race in 2nd place, and was also runner up in the long jump with a personal best jump of 4.21m. Eileen was also an "A" string runner up with her personal best threw of 14.65m in the javelin, and knocked 25 seconds off her 800m personal best with a time of 2:51.6 and a 3rd place "A" string finish in the 800m.

Well done also to Elliot Stanton, running in the under 13 boys 800m, who was competing for the club for the first time.

Livingston won the second match overall, finishing first with 387 points, with Corstorphine close behind on 349 points. Round Three takes place at Grangemouth Stadium on Thursday 18th June, and we'll need a strong team available to maintain our position at the top of Division Two.
