CSSAL Match 1 Highlights

 8 May 2009

Twenty nine of the club's athletes arrived at Linwood Sports Centre last Sunday morning for round one of the Central & South of Scotland Athletic League.

Despite a near detour to Loch Lomond, we were the first club to arrive at Linwood and secured a prime spot in the stand, which proved useful when the rain arrived mid-afternoon.

There were too many first and second place performances to mention, but more impressively, despite the blustery wind throughout the day, the athletes managed 17 personal bests out of 62 individual performances!

In the under 11 events, with a shortage of available athletes, Gemma Hummerstone, Taygan Henry and Fraser McLean all competed in three events each; the long jump, the 80m and the 800m.

Gemma achieved two personal bests with her first place finishes in the long jump (3.17m) and 800m (2:59.1), while Fraser had a personal best in the long jump (3.38m), and Taygan had a personal best in the 800m (3:11.9).

The under 13 athletes were also on top form, with 8 personal bests between them. In the 800m, Yasmin Eddie knocked 10 seconds off her previous best with a time of 3:36.1, while, in the 100m, Robbie Narin ran a personal best for the first time since July 2008 with a time of 14.2.

In the under 13 girls high jump, Nikisha Wright added 5cm to her personal best with an impressive height of 1.40m, putting her comfortably into the UK top 20, while Yasmin Eddie also added 5cm to her personal best with a jump of 1.00m.

In the under 13 boys shot putt, Robbie Nairn gained his second personal best of the day, throwing a massive 9.27m to easily win the event and beat the long standing club record.

Scott Malcolm also threw a personal best in the shot putt with a distance of 4.07m, while Hayley Donaldson and Aidan McCusker both jumped personal bests in the long jump with distances of 3.10m and 3.64m respectively.

Shawn Wright was the fourth athlete to manage double personal bests, winning the under 15 boys "B" string 100m in 13.4, and throwing 22.92m in the javelin earlier in the day.

In the under 15 girls long jump, both competitors managed personal bests, with with Eileen Hulse jumping 3.93m and Mhairi Horn jumping 3.13m.

The under 17 events were sparsely attended, with the club entering just one male and female athlete. In the women's events, Vicky Dalziel won the 300m with a personal best of 44.4, while in the male events, Steven Sneddon made his club debut competing in the 100m, 400m and long jump.

Congratulations to the following athletes who won "Athlete of the Match" awards:

Male Winner - Robbie Nairn
Male Runner-Up - Fraser McLean

Female Winner - Nikisha Wright
Female Runner-Up - Gemma Hummerstone
