Indoor National Championships

 17 February 2009

Our athletes were back at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, over the weekend for the Scottish Athletics national age group championships, with the U13/U15 event held on Saturday, and the U17/U20 competition on Sunday.

Under 13 athlete Ella McFarlane, and under 15 athlete Rhiannon Armstrong both did the 60m/200m sprint double, with Ella progressing to the under 13 girls 60m semi finals after a 3rd place finish in her heat, while Rhiannon set an indoor personal best time of 29.07 in the 200m.

In the under 15 boys competition, Scott Henderson finished 3rd in his 60m heat to progress to the semi finals where he finished his race 6th in a time of 8.25.

On Sunday, Matthew Thomson finished 9th in the under 17 mens high jump competition, jumping 1.70m for the 3rd time this year, while Vicky Dalziel was 7th in the under 17 womens shot putt with a throw of 8.45m, and ran 9.69 in the 60m hurdles to finish 4th in heat 2.

The highlight of the weekend was Robbie Nairn (pictured) in the under 13 boys shot putt. In what was a very tough competition with a full strength field, a personal best thrown of 8.55m put Robbie in the bronze medal spot and moved him up to 5th place in the UK rankings.

Robbie also competed in the 60m, where a 3rd place finish in heat 3 saw him progress to the semi finals. He finished his race in 4th place with a time of 8.79 just a few hundredths of second short of qualifying for the final.
